About the Conference

Today, microalgae and its related products have gained a remarkable position in the market, the biomass of algae is closely related to our daily life and living environment. The biodiversity of microalgae is enormous and it has been estimated that about 200,000-800,000 algal species exist of which about 35,000 species are described. In recent years, numerous studies suggested that these diversified organisms having very high potential to serve as rich and untapped resources for a wide range of commercial; environmental; pharmaceutical; food and fuel applications.

With this background, the School of Science & Technology of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) has organized two conferences, one for dissemination of contemporary development and advances in the field of Algal Biomass whereas the other on prevention and management of harmful algal blooms in the South China Sea. This year, the 6th International Conference on Prevention and Management of Harmful Algal Blooms in the South China Sea cum the 2nd International Conference on Beneficial Uses of Algal Biomass, 2015 (HABSCS-ICBUAB 2015) will be held in The Open University of Hong Kong during November 20-23, 2015.

The conference HABSCS-ICBUAB 2015 aims at exploring new ideas and encouraging collaboration among experts and scientists from government, institutions, universities and industry in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas so that emerging and useful technologies in algal biology, biomass production, cultivation, harvesting, extraction, applications and the prevention & management of HABs can be identified and exchanged. The conference will provide an invaluable opportunity for regional and local experts involved in related disciplines to exchange views on new research findings, knowledge and technologies. Local and regional participants will also exchange experiences and obtain new ideas from leading experts from overseas at the roundtable discussion, forum and keynote speech sessions. Through in-depth reviews of the previous and current situations and discussions on future research, conference participants will be able to gain better understanding of the current status of algal biomass studies and research directions in the near future.
